In Medieval times surgery was mostly carried out by monks. Following the Bull (1215) that reinstated the pronouncement issued from the Council of Tours (1163) "Ecclesia abhorret a sanguine", the monks had to give up surgery and pass on their knowledge to individuals who did not belong to the church. The people of Preci in Italy became very skilled craftsmen and handed down the secrets of surgery from father to son over many generations. Members of the SCACCHI family specialized themselves and become known above all for curing the eyes. They served for decades as "eye-doctors" for the French Royal Family.
The surgeons of Preci also carried out lithotomy, phlebotomy and castration with surgical instruments which they designed and produced themselves. Instruments and techniques were obviously well ahead of their time and used by other surgeons only centuries later. The school came to an end in 1751 after a Papal edict.
